What are adaptogens?
Adaptogens support the body’s natural ability to deal with stress. They have the unique ability to “adapt” their function according to the specific needs of the body. Each adaptogen has a different effect on the body, so the choice of which one to take depends on the result you seek.
When we face a stressor, whether physical or mental, our bodies go through physiological changes called general adaptation syndrome (GAS) – a three stage response: alarm, resistance and exhaustion. This response system sets off a bunch of physical responses that affect immune function, our hormones, cognitive function, and our internal clock, eventually causing health issues; like pain, digestive concerns, insomnia, and more. If these stressors persist, chronic illness can occur.
For example, when you are stressed your adrenal gland releases cortisol, a natural response to a perceived threat or danger. Higher than normal levels of cortisol can be bad for our bodies. Ashwagandha, reishi and holy basil are three adaptogens that help to sooth stressed adrenals.
